Shri Dhanwantri Generic Medical Stores Scheme is being implemented with the aim of providing affordable and quality generic medicines to the people of all age groups, and this scheme has helped the beneficiaries save more than Rs 100 crore so far. This scheme has brought a major relief to the people of Chhattisgarh, by lightening the burden of medical expenses. Under this scheme operated in all the urban bodies of the state, generic medicines of renowned companies are made available to the beneficiaries at 50 to 70 percent lower prices. Medicines for cold, cough, fever, blood pressure, insulin along with the drugs for serious diseases, antibiotics, surgical items are also being made available to the needy at subsidized prices in Dhanwantri medical shops.

Under the guidance of Chief Minister Mr. Bhupesh Baghel, Shri Dhanwantri Generic Medical Store scheme was started by the Urban Administration and Development Department from October 20, 2021. Under the scheme, 194 Shree Dhanwantri Medical Stores have been opened in all the 169 urban bodies of the state. It has been made mandatory for the government doctors to prescribe generic medicines to the patients coming for treatment in the hospital. Till date, medicines of total MRP Rs 165.59 crore has been sold under the scheme and a discount of Rs 106 crore 53 lakh has been provided on the medicines to the beneficiaries. It is worth mentioning that more than 50 lakh 80 thousand people have bought low-cost medicines from Shri Dhanwantri Generic Medical Shops operating in various urban bodies of the state. Urban Administration Minister Dr. Shivkumar Dahria regularly monitors the availability and operation of medicines in  Shri Dhanwantri generic medical stores. He has directed the departmental officers to ensure all the necessary arrangements to make available the high quality generic medicines at subsidized rates to common people. 


Urban Administration Department officials told that there are 20 Shri Dhanwantari Medical Stores in Raipur district, four in Gariaband, seven in Balodabazar-Bhatapara, seven in Dhamtari, six in Mahasamund, 19 in Durg, eight in Balod, eight in Bemetara, five in Rajnandgaon, Khairagarh-Chhuikhadan and three in Gandai, one in Mohla-Manpur-Ambagarh, six in Kabeerdham, 10 in Bilaspur and two Dhanwantari generic medical stores being operated in Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi district. Similarly, four Shri Dhanwantari Medicine Stores are operating in Mungeli, six in Korba, nine in Janjgir-Champa, six in Sakti, eight in Raigarh, five in Sarangarh-Bilaigarh, five in Jashpur, four in Surguja, five in Balrampur, six in Surajpur, two in Korea , five in Manendragarh-Chirmiri-Bharatpur, three in Bastar, three in Kondagaon, one in Narayanpur, six in Kanker, five in Dantewada, three in Sukma and three Dhanwantari generic medical stores are being operated in Bijapur district. It has been made mandatory for the government doctors to prescribe generic medicines to the patients coming for treatment in the hospital.
