St. Thomas College, Bhilai, celebrating Peace Week under the banner of the Peace Club in collaboration with the Department of Education, creating a vibrant platform for promoting the values of harmony, empathy, and nonviolence. The week witnessed active participation from B.Ed. students, who will be delivering presentations on the lives and contributions of renowned peace ambassadors such as Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Malala Yousafzai, Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, Dalai Lama, Kailash Satyarthi, and Nelson Mandela.
The inaugural ceremony held on 6th April was graced by Administrator Fr. Dr. P. S. Varghese, Principal Dr. Shiny Mendonce, Dean of Academics Dr. Debjani Mukherjee, Head of the Department of Education Dr. Deepti Santosh, and Peace Club Convenor Dr. Reema Dewangan, marking a significant beginning to the week-long celebration.
On 7th April, the keynote session was delivered by Dr. Nimmi Varghese, Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology and a certified trainer in peace and Nonviolence from the University of Rhode Island, USA. Her session on Martin Luther King Jr. began with a reflective meditation activity, encouraging participants to shift from negative to positive thoughts, highlighting the importance of emotional regulation.
Dr. Varghese emphasized that peace is not merely the absence of conflict but a state of justice and well-being. She explained the concepts of negative and positive peace and elaborated on various forms of violence, including psychological and interpersonal conflicts. A key takeaway was the distinction between “non-violence” and “nonviolence,” the latter being an active force for transformation.
The session concluded with a powerful message that peace is a way of life. Inspired by the words of Martin Luther King Jr., students were encouraged to keep moving forward in their journey as peace ambassadors, contributing positively to society.
