The ninth convocation ceremony of Hidayatullah National Law University was held in a dignified and solemn atmosphere, with Surya Kant, the Chief Justice of India, attending as the Chief Guest. Delivering the convocation address, the Chief Justice called upon graduating students to embrace patience, sustained learning and a collaborative spirit as essential pillars of a meaningful and enduring legal career.
Speaking on the theme “Sustaining a Long and Fulfilling Legal Career,” Justice Surya Kant emphasised that a convocation marks not the end of an academic journey but a transition into professional life. While university years are guided by curriculum and timelines, he observed, professional life demands independent decision-making and the ability to chart one’s own course.
Congratulating the graduates, their parents and faculty members, the Chief Justice described the occasion as a moment of pride for both the institution and families. Reflecting on campus life—enriched by academic engagement, debates, sports and cultural activities—he expressed confidence that these experiences would continue to guide and strengthen students in their future pursuits.
Highlighting the importance of collaboration in the legal profession, Justice Surya Kant noted that although court proceedings may appear adversarial, the justice delivery system is fundamentally rooted in cooperation. Every argument presented before a court, he said, represents the collective efforts of junior advocates, senior counsel, colleagues and researchers. The system, he added, is reinforced by shared responsibility and a common commitment to upholding the rule of law.
Drawing an analogy with a great river formed by the confluence of many streams, the Chief Justice remarked that each member of the legal fraternity contributes to sustaining the flow of justice. He urged students to treat peers and colleagues with respect and sensitivity, noting that today’s classmates may become future collaborators, opposing counsel or members of the Bench.
Sharing an anecdote from his early years at the Bar, Justice Surya Kant recounted how extending professional guidance to a colleague laid the foundation for a long-standing association and friendship. In a profession that spans decades, he said, no act of goodwill goes in vain.
Describing law as a long-term discipline, the Chief Justice observed that experience, judgment and reputation are built gradually over time. Initial progress may appear slow compared to other careers, but the formative years establish a strong foundation for sustained success. He advised graduates to measure their growth not in months, but in years and decades.
Justice Surya Kant further underlined that continuity, diligence and integrity command lasting respect in the legal profession. Professional stature, he said, is defined by sustained conduct rather than isolated achievements. Patience, intellectual curiosity and unwavering commitment remain indispensable attributes for legal practitioners.
Advising graduates against the pursuit of instant success, the Chief Justice encouraged them to remain connected with the university community and to support one another in their professional journeys. Time, he said, should be regarded as an ally in shaping both personal character and professional identity.
Concluding his address, the Chief Justice conveyed his best wishes to the graduates and expressed gratitude to parents for their sacrifices and steadfast support. He also commended the faculty and staff for nurturing not only legal acumen but also a sense of responsibility and ethical conduct among students.
On the occasion, Chhattisgarh High Court Chief Justice and University Chancellor Ramesh Sinha conferred six Doctor of Philosophy degrees, eighty-eight Master of Laws degrees, and one hundred and forty-eight Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws (Honours) degrees. In total, 242 students were awarded degrees. The ceremony was attended by parents, faculty members and distinguished guests.
