The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Raipur and the Tata Steel Foundation (TSF) have formalised a strategic partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 15 January 2026. The MoU was signed by Dr. Sanjeev Parashar, Director-in-Charge, IIM Raipur, and Mr. Sourav Roy, Chief Executive Officer, Tata Steel Foundation, marking a significant step towards advancing social impact education and community-oriented learning. Mr. Vinayak Kishore, Consultant, Public Policy, Tata Steel Foundation, was also present on the occasion.
The collaboration aims to foster joint initiatives across key areas such as social impact, public policy, strategy, management, and community immersion. Under the MoU, IIM Raipur and Tata Steel Foundation will work together on the design and delivery of academic and non-academic programmes and courses, as well as the development of social impact oriented research outputs, including research papers, white papers, and policy reports. The agreement will remain in effect until 31 March 2028, with 15 January 2026 as the date of commencement.
A cornerstone of this partnership is the “Management for Social Impact” course, a compulsory half-credit course at IIM Raipur. An integral component of this course is “Unurum”, a two-day rural immersion module facilitated by the Tata Steel Foundation in collaboration with partner NGOs operating in rural regions of Chhattisgarh. The course is designed to expose management students to the theories, frameworks, and real-world experiences that underpin social impact initiatives, public policy, and development practice.
Through Unurum, students engage directly with communities, gaining first-hand insights into grassroots realities. This experiential learning approach enables participants to understand development challenges beyond the classroom and encourages reflection on the role of business leaders in creating inclusive and sustainable impact.
The objective of the Unurum (Social Immersion) programme is to build awareness and sensitivity among future managers regarding the socioeconomic challenges faced by vulnerable communities. By placing rural contexts, equity, and empathy at the centre of learning, the programme seeks to reshape perspectives on leadership and decision-making. The experience is aimed at strengthening students’ emotional intelligence and nurturing them as socially conscious and transformational leaders.
This partnership reflects IIM Raipur’s commitment to integrating academic excellence with societal relevance, while reinforcing Tata Steel Foundation’s mission to enable sustainable development through knowledge, collaboration, and community engagement.
