In a poignant celebration of literary heritage and cultural introspection, the Indian Institute of Management Raipur commemorated the legacy of the legendary Hindi writer, Shri Munshi Premchand, through an immersive evening curated by the Institute’s Cultural Committee, Rang. The event brought together theatre, poetry, music, and dance to honour his indelible influence on Indian literature and social thought. The commemorative evening began with the ceremonial Deep Prajwalan, led by Prof. Sanjeev Prashar, Director-in-Charge, symbolising the illumination of knowledge and the timeless relevance of his humanistic ideals. This was followed by the screening of a short documentary titled “Kalam Se Kranti Tak”, a visual narrative chronicling the journey of Shri Premchand’s revolutionary pen and his role in shaping national consciousness through storytelling.
The cultural centrepiece of the evening was a thought-provoking theatrical adaptation of “Kareem Ke Joote”, one of his satirical works. The play unravelled a nuanced tale of attachment, socio-economic identity, and the ironies of material obsession. The story’s emotional core lay in Kareem Miya’s sentimental bond with his worn-out shoes, serving as a metaphorical critique of ego and social vanity, culminating in a commentary on legal and ethical boundaries. Further enriching the evening was a segment dedicated to original poetry that resonated deeply with the ethos, where the students of IIM Raipur paid homage to the simplicity and emotional depth inherent in his narratives. A powerful contemporary dance drama titled “Natya Nitra” took the stage, portraying the severe impacts of poverty, addiction, and emotional disintegration within the familial structure. Set to the poignant melodies, the performance served as a sobering visual essay on the erosion of empathy in the face of deprivation, culminating in a haunting rhetorical question: “Is poverty so consuming that it erodes the very humanity within us?”
The evening concluded on a deeply emotional note with a soulful rendition of “Lukka Chuppi” by students from the institute. The performance encapsulated themes of maternal love, longing, and emotional reunion, serving as a fitting finale to a night steeped in reflection, creativity, and cultural reverence. The event was not merely a tribute, but a vibrant reminder. Through a confluence of literary interpretation and artistic expression, IIM Raipur reaffirmed its commitment to fostering cultural consciousness, moral inquiry, and social empathy, core pillars that defined the literary vision and continue to illuminate our collective conscience.
