Chhattisgarh Rajim Maghi Punnnu Mela will be now known as Chhattisgarh Rajim Kumbh (Kalp) Mela as Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly on Wednesday passsed Chhattisgarh Rajim Maghi Punni Mela (Amendment) Bill-2024. 

Religious Trust and Endowment Minister Brijmohan Agrawal tabled Chhattisgarh Rajim Maghi Punni Mela (Amendment) Bill-2024 in the House on the 12th day of the budget session, on Wednesday. 

After tabling the bill in the House, Religious Trust and Endowment Minister Agrawal requested Speaker of Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly Dr Raman Singh to allow discussion on the bill in the House today. 

The Chair allowed the discussion on Chhattisgarh Rajim Maghi Punni Mela (Amendment) Bill-2024. 

Kurud BJP MLA Ajay Chandrakar initiated discussion on the bill. BJP MLA Chandrakar, during the discussion, said that the previous Congress government had tried to change the history and tradition of Chhattisgarh by changing the change of Rajim Kumbh Mela as Maghi Punni Mela. 

Participating in the discussion on the bill, Kota Congress MLA Atal Shrivastava said that name and fame could not be earned by changing the name of Rajim Maghi Punni Mela. 

Beltara MLA Sushant Shukla, Chandrapur Congress MLA Ram Kumar Yadav and other MLAs from the ruling BJP and the main opposition Congress particiapted in the discussion. 

Replying to the bill, Religious Trust and Endowment Minister Brijmohan Agrawal said that Rajim Kumbh (Kalp) Mela was known till 13 years but the previous Congress government had changed the name of Rajim Kumbh (Kalp) Mela as Rajim Maghi Mela due to political reason. The BJP government has taken an initiative to revive the tradition. 

The State government has amended the bill to change the name of Rajim Maghi Mela as Rajim Kumbh (Kalp) Mela that will enrich history and tradition of Chhattisgarh. Over 25 lakh people will visit Rajim after changing the name of Rajim Maghi Punni Mela as Rajim Kumbh (Kalp) Mela. Thousands of saints and seers, who are the ambassadors of the country, will visit Rajim. The Rajim Kumbh (Kalp) Mela will prevail the glory of Chhattisgarh at nation level, said Brijmohan Agrawal in the House. 

Leader of Opposition in Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly Dr Charan Das Mahant, Patan MLA Bhupesh Baghel and other Congress MLAs sought division over the Chhattisgarh Rajim Maghi Punni Mela (Amendment) Bill-2024. 

Assembly Speaker Dr Raman Singh, who was in the Chair, informed the House that 43 votes were received in favour of the Chhattisgarh Rajim Maghi Punni Mela (Amendment) Bill-2024 and 30 votes were received against the Chhattisgarh Rajim Maghi Punni Mela (Amendment) Bill-2024. The BJP MLAs voted in favour of the Chhattisgarh Rajim Maghi Punni Mela (Amendment) Bill-2024 while the Congress MLAs voted against the bill.

According to the bill, Chhattisgarh Rajim Maghi Punni Mela Adhiniyam-2006 will be now known as the Chhattisgarh Rajim Kumbh (Kalp) Mela Adhiniyam-2006. "Maghi Punni Mela" will be subsituted with "Kumbh (Kalp) Mela" in the Act.
